Climate

The best time to visit Thailand is from November to February when the northeast monsoon is blowing cool, dry air which serves as a respite from the heat. During this cool season, the temperature ranges from 18ºC to 32ºC in Bangkok, while in northern and northeast Thailand, temperatures can get quite cool with morning temperatures as low as 8º C to 12º C with the occasional 20º C day. Nights can be particularly chilly and at high altitudes the temperatures can and do drop below freezing.

The summer period, or hot and dry season, is from March to June. At this time temperatures in Bangkok average around 34º C, but can often reach 40º C with the humidity levels of 75%.

Try and avoid April, unless you plan to be permanently submerged in the ocean, because this is the hottest month across the country.

From July to October is the monsoonal season when most of Thailand's annual rainfall is accumulated. The humidity averages just fewer than 90%, with temperatures averaging around 29º C in Bangkok.

Language

Thai is the national language, although English is widely spoken (secondary language of the elite), ethnic and regional dialects

What to wear

Clothing choices for Thailand tend to be personal and depend on activities, seasons and locations. Location and season can make a difference if one is travelling to the mountainous areas of the North and Northeast. A long sleeved shirt or light jacket is often advised for night time outdoors. Thai Temples and Palaces will usually ban shorts and tank tops, especially for women

T Shirts seem to be extremely popular among tourists ... and they are widely available in the street markets around Thailand. But they are not considered proper dress with adult Thais. A pullover shirt with a collar makes a much better impression.

Business hours

Department stores open around 10 a.m. and close between 8.00 p.m. and 10.00 p.m.
Smaller businesses are open from 8.30/9.00 a.m. until 5.30/6.30 p.m., while some family-run shops are open all day. Pubs and clubs are open from around 7.00 p.m. until the early hours - times differ.
Restaurant hours vary, too: some close at 5.30/6.00 p.m. while others stay open until midnight and later.

The electric current in Thailand is 220 volts at 50 cycles. Electrical plugs with two rounded pins are the most widely used.
